IS IT TRUE?

Is there a 12,068-year solar cycle?

Verdict · Speculative

No evidence for a fixed 12,068-year cycle. Extreme solar storms are real, but the dated ones come at irregular gaps.

Speculative: A hypothesis with little direct evidence so far.

The short answer

The Sun does run in cycles, and it has thrown storms far bigger than anything in modern records. Tree rings let us date several of them. But those storms do not line up on a 12,068-year beat, and Earth's magnetic field has not flipped on that schedule either. The 2046 date comes from one researcher's model, not from a measured pattern.

What the record shows

  1. The Sun's best-measured cycle is about 11 years. Sunspots and flares rise and fall, and the Sun's magnetic poles swap places at each peak. 1
  2. Even that cycle is not exact. It has run as short as 8 years and as long as 14. 2
  3. Tree rings record sudden jumps in radiocarbon caused by extreme solar storms, called Miyake events. Confirmed ones date to 7176 BC, 5259 BC, 664–663 BC, AD 774 and AD 993. 3
  4. A 2023 study of trees preserved near Gap, in the French Alps, found the largest spike yet, about 14,300 years ago (around 12,350 BC). It was roughly twice the size of the 774 and 993 events. 45
  5. That 12,350 BC event still needs independent confirmation from wood in other regions and from other isotopes such as beryllium-10. 3
  6. The gaps between the dated storms run about 5,174, 1,917, 4,595, 1,437 and 219 years. None is close to 12,068. Counting 12,068 years forward from 12,350 BC lands around 280 BC, and no storm is recorded there. 3
  7. Earth's magnetic field fully flips about every 300,000 years on average. The last full reversal was about 780,000 years ago, not 12,000. 67

Where the claim comes from

The cycle comes from Douglas Vogt of the Diehold Foundation. In talks and videos he has said that Earth's magnetic poles reverse every 12,068 years, driven by a burst from the Sun, and he has named October 2046 as the next one. Science writers have pointed out that we cannot even predict exactly when the 11-year cycle will start or end. 89

What would change our verdict

Independent, dated records (tree rings, ice cores or lake sediments) showing storms or field reversals spaced 12,068 years apart, published and replicated by other labs.
