IS IT TRUE?

Did Oswald act alone in killing JFK?

Verdict · Contested

Oswald fired the shots. Whether anyone helped him is still disputed, and the CIA did hide things from investigators.

Contested: Evidence exists but qualified scholars disagree.

The short answer

Both official investigations concluded Oswald fired the shots that killed Kennedy. They split on whether he had help: the Warren Commission said no, and a House committee said probably yes, based on acoustic evidence that a National Research Council panel later rejected. The record also shows the CIA kept its Castro assassination plots from the Warren Commission. The files released in 2025 and 2026 have not, so far, turned up a second gunman.

What the record shows

  1. Kennedy was shot at about 12:30 p.m. on November 22, 1963, as his motorcade passed the Texas School Book Depository. Oswald, a recently hired employee there, was arrested the same day. Jack Ruby shot Oswald dead two days later. 1
  2. The Warren Commission (1964) concluded that Oswald fired three shots from the sixth-floor window and found no evidence that he or Ruby was part of a conspiracy. 2
  3. In 1979 the House Select Committee on Assassinations also found Oswald fired the fatal shots, but said acoustic evidence showed "a high probability that two gunmen fired," and that Kennedy was "probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy." 3
  4. That committee found the CIA, FBI and Secret Service were not involved, and that the Soviet and Cuban governments were not involved. 4
  5. In 1982 a National Research Council panel found the acoustic analyses did not show a shot from the grassy knoll. The sounds were recorded about a minute after the shooting. 5
  6. A 2013 CIA in-house history says Director John McCone kept the agency's plots to kill Fidel Castro from the Warren Commission. The historian called it a "benign cover-up." 6
  7. Congress ordered the records released by 2017. Some were withheld until 2025, and the National Archives posted another 11,022 pages on January 30, 2026. 7
  8. An early AP review of the March 2025 files found new detail on CIA operations in Cuba, but nothing that undercut the lone-gunman conclusion. 8

Where the claim comes from

Doubt started almost immediately. In a Gallup poll taken in 1963, 52% believed some group other than the gunman was involved. The House committee's 1979 finding, the CIA's withheld information and decades of classified files kept it going. In 2023, 65% of Americans told Gallup they believed in a conspiracy. 9

What would change our verdict

A released record or physical evidence that places a second shooter in Dealey Plaza, or shows someone directing Oswald.
