Was the Moon landing faked?
No. Six crews landed from 1969 to 1972 and left equipment we can still photograph and bounce lasers off.
Established: Supported by strong, converging evidence. The short answer
The Apollo landings happened. They brought back 382 kilograms of lunar rock, left mirrors that observatories still aim lasers at, and left hardware that a NASA orbiter photographed decades later. The hoax claim has never had physical evidence behind it. It got a new wave of attention when Artemis II flew astronauts around the Moon in April 2026.
What the record shows
- Six Apollo missions landed astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. 12
- They brought back 382 kilograms of lunar material in about 2,200 samples, which labs around the world still study. 2
- Mirrors left by Apollo crews are still used for laser ranging from Earth. 3
- NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed the Apollo landing sites from orbit starting in 2009, showing the descent stages and the astronauts' tracks. 45
- Artemis II flew astronauts around the Moon in April 2026. Claims that it was staged spread online. AFP fact-checkers traced one viral "proof" to a failed text overlay by a broadcaster that carried NASA's feed. 67
- In a June 2026 YouGov poll, 14% of Americans said the 1969 landing was probably or definitely staged. 8
Where the claim comes from
Hoax claims took off in the 1970s and returned with each new space milestone. They mostly rest on readings of photos, such as shadows, missing stars and a "waving" flag, rather than on any evidence that the hardware, samples or tracking data were fake. 6
What would change our verdict
Evidence that the lunar samples were made on Earth, or that the hardware photographed on the Moon is not there.
