Will a pole shift flood the continents?
The best-known flood map's dates have already passed. Magnetic pole flips do not move continents or oceans.
Speculative: A hypothesis with little direct evidence so far.The short answer
Maps of a drowned future world, like Gordon-Michael Scallion's, come from psychic predictions, and their deadlines have come and gone. They also mix up two different things: Earth's magnetic poles, which do wander and flip, and its rotation axis, which controls climate and sea level. The geologic record shows past magnetic flips without the floods or ice changes these maps describe.
What the record shows
- Scallion's 1996 Future Map of the World predicted three magnetic pole shifts of six to eight degrees in 1998–2001, followed by flooding of huge areas through 2012. 1
- His 1992 Future Map of the United States had placed the upheaval in 1993–95. 1
- Earth's magnetic poles are not its geographic poles. The geographic poles are set by the axis the planet spins on. 3
- The magnetic north pole has drifted more than 1,100 km since 1831, and the field fully flips about every 300,000 years on average. 3
- The last full reversal was about 780,000 years ago. Fossils show no drastic changes in life, and ocean sediment cores show no change in glacial activity. A change in the rotation axis would show up in that record. 4
- Lost continents on these maps, like Lemuria, began as an 1864 idea from zoologist Philip Sclater to explain lemur fossils. Plate tectonics made it unnecessary. 56
Where the claim comes from
Scallion attributed his visions to what he called "The Matrix" and, from as early as 1982, published a series of "Future Maps" through his Matrix Institute. Original copies now sell as collectible curiosities. The same imagery keeps circulating online, usually without the dates that already failed. 12
What would change our verdict
Geologic evidence that a past magnetic reversal coincided with a shift in Earth's rotation axis or with sudden, global flooding.
